Andrew Johnson

Current occupation: Software developer

Education: Some college

Why are you running for a seat on the Brooklyn Center City Council?

Johnson: I am running for a seat on the Brooklyn Center City Council to champion economic development, prioritize effective and balanced governance, and enhance public safety. My vision is to engage with residents, amplify diverse voices, and create opportunities that foster a vibrant, inclusive, and connected community for everyone.

What is the biggest issue Brooklyn Center faces today and what should the city do to address that issue?

Johnson: Brooklyn Center has faced significant economic challenges since the closures of major retailers like Brookdale Mall, Target, and Walmart. These closures have not only led to empty storefronts but also reduced shopping and employment opportunities, impacting the local economy. To revitalize Brooklyn Center, the city should explore tax incentives for new businesses, support redevelopment of vacant properties, and promote market-rate housing to attract new residents. This approach would create a stable customer base for local businesses, encourage investments, and drive economic growth, making Brooklyn Center a more vibrant community for generations to come.

What should the city prioritize in terms of public safety?

Johnson: Brooklyn Center should prioritize fully staffing the police department and enhancing community policing to strengthen public safety. As of June 2024, 39 of the 50 authorized officer positions were filled. Officers need to engage directly with residents to understand and address their concerns. I support ongoing transparency efforts, like the police data dashboard and regular social media updates, which are essential for maintaining community trust. Continuing and building on these initiatives will help ensure a safer environment and foster stronger connections between law enforcement and the community.

Multiple major road construction projects are planned for Brooklyn Center in the coming years. How should the city approach automobile traffic, public transportation and other means of travel?

Johnson: Brooklyn Center should prioritize safety in all road construction projects, including Highway 252. I oppose MnDOT’s current freeway plan due to potential safety, environmental, and community impacts. The city should focus on crime prevention and enhancing security at the Brooklyn Center Transit Center, where issues persist. Additionally, expanding traffic calming measures, like speed humps and lane narrowing, will improve road safety for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. Strengthening these initiatives will help create safer travel environments across all modes of transportation in Brooklyn Center.
